How to transport IVF samples internationally
At Life on Ice, we understand that transporting sperm, eggs, and embryos across international borders can feel like a daunting process. Whether you're relocating, using an international fertility clinic, or shipping samples for storage, we’re here to guide you through the process.
Here’s what you need to know to ensure a smooth, secure, and compliant international transport. Sound like a lot of work? We can take care of it all for you. Contact Bob.
1. Understand the Regulations
Transporting reproductive material internationally is subject to strict rules. Here's what to keep in mind:
- HFEA Compliance: Samples entering or leaving the UK are regulated by the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA). You must make sure the target or receiving clinic is licensed by the HFEA.
- Local Laws: Each country has its own regulations for importing and exporting human tissue. We can help coordinate these requirements to avoid delays.
- Documentation: Proper paperwork, including consent forms and shipping permits, is essential. We’ll liaise with clinics to ensure everything is in order.
2. What is different from domestic transfers?
As we mentioned above, local laws can be a big factor. For example when importing into the US there are very strict requirements for blood borne virus (BBV) positive samples which require extra approval.
It is also important to have paperwork from both clinics detailing what is being transported and that it is expected at the other end. This is important for security as a cryoshipper cannot be x-rayed. It must remain upright.
What is a cryoshipper?
A cryoshipper is an insulated vessel with a membrane in the walls. They are cooled using liquid nitrogen to -196°C, and the vapour absorbs into the shipper walls. The shipper then holds this temperature for weeks or months at a time - and frozen straws containing the samples can be inserted and transported safely.
At Life on Ice we also fit our shippers with continuous temperature monitoring probes which display the current temperature and record it so know the internal temperature at all times. This is the safest way to transport sperm and embryos: In a validated shipper designed for that purpose and hand carried by a trained courier.
It is possible to perform your own transport but you do not have the same reassurance about the temperature, whether the shipper is validated (i.e. whether it actually maintains the low temperature and has not failed), and what to do if something does go wrong.
3. What to Expect from Life on Ice
When you choose Life on Ice for international IVF transport, we handle the complexities so you don’t have to:
- Seamless Coordination: We’ll liaise with both clinics to arrange schedules, permits, and any additional documentation.
- Hand-Carry Service: A dedicated courier will personally accompany your samples from start to finish, minimising risks.
- Global Reach: We’re experienced in transporting samples to and from major cities worldwide, as well as more remote destinations.
- Real-Time Updates: We provide ongoing updates throughout the journey for your peace of mind.
5. Common Questions About International Transport
- How long can samples stay frozen during transport?
Our cryoshippers are validated for extended durations lasting at least two weeks at a time. In practice we refill them on a regular basis. - Do I need to arrange paperwork with my clinic?
We’ll coordinate directly with your clinics to get everything organised, but to do this we need you to sign our consent form. - How much does it cost?
International transport costs vary depending on distance, regional conditions (such as war or political instability), and other factors. Contact us for a personalised quote.
